Laura Despins, Certified Athletic Therapist, Kinesiologist
I was born and raised in Metchosin, BC, and have enjoyed every moment of living on the beautiful West Coast. I graduated from Camosun College with a Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy and am now a certified Athletic Therapist and Kinesiologist at Parkway Physiotherapy. Although I grew up very active early, I spent my early career working at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort, executing once in a lifetime events such as weddings, conferences and golf tournaments. It wasn’t until I became heavily involved in running and kickboxing that I developed many overuse injuries and became a client at Parkway Physiotherapy myself. My experiences through physiotherapy and my athletic background ignited my passion for becoming involved in health and wellness and starting my schooling at Camosun.
Years after I finished school, I sustained a severe foot injury while mountain biking, which left me unable to fully weight bear or walk for eight months. At first, I was crushed at realizing I wouldn’t live my usual active lifestyle; however, after two days spent on the couch, I was motivated to discover what I was capable of and continue to be involved. I got an off-road knee scooter and went to the gym daily. Having sustained a life-changing injury, I further developed my clinical skills, empathy towards clients, and creativity to find new ways to exercise. If I could sum up what I learned in my years of schooling into one sentence, it would be the importance of exercise and living a healthy lifestyle to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries and chronic diseases.
As an Athletic Therapist, I work with a broad spectrum of clients, not just athletes. I have a particular interest in treating clients who have suffered from concussions and work-related accidents.
A big part of my treatment is genuinely getting to know my clients and their personal goals and help them get back to their “normal”. This can be anything from walking to the mailbox and back, completing a 10km run, Crossfit or being able to hike and enjoy the west coast. My goal is for you to leave feeling better than when you came in!

A person once told me that your body is your best doctor and will heal itself; you just need to provide it with the right elements and environment to succeed.
I was first introduced to the world of rehabilitation after I suffered from a traumatic accident that left me broken mentally and physically. With the support of a fantastic rehabilitation team combined with pure determination to find my new normal, I went from being bound to a wheelchair to walking independently to eventually getting back to running. Through my endeavours, I learned that I had a desire to learn more about different rehabilitation modalities. The next thing I realized, I was signed up to attend school at Camosun College in the Exercise and Wellness program.
Four years later, I earned a degree and received the CSEP /SCPE Undergraduate Student Award – Exercise Therapy awarded to a program graduate with the highest academic standing in the curriculum’s scientific portion.
I am now certified as a BC Kinesiologist, Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology – Certified Exercise Physiologist, Level 1 Yoga Instructor, and Functional Movement Screener Level 1.
No matter where you are in your journey, I will be working closely with the Parkway team to provide you with the best support from the training derived from science-based evidence. You can expect to be led or assisted through a personal conditioning program specific to your needs in a training session with me. In the session, I will provide technical feedback, answer questions or concerns related to the treatment plan, and assist you in understanding your condition or the required rehabilitation.
My goal is to help you reach your maximum potential in a safe and healthy environment, the way that my rehabilitation team once helped me when I was injured. I genuinely want to create a lasting positive impression on my client’s lives and ensure that they can reach the full potential that they deserve.

Hi, I’m Calum! I’m a registered clinical counsellor (BCACC #23339) with a Master’s in Counselling Psychology. Before becoming a counsellor I held many different roles where I always found myself helping people. At first, my mechanical engineering background led me to the computer-aided design of prosthetics. From there, I spent 12 years helping rugby players and coaches make decisions under pressure at hundreds of competitions including the Olympics and Rugby World Cups. I’ve co-founded three men’s support groups which promote emotional literacy, communication, and belonging among men. I’ve also worked in the trades, public service, and corporate coaching. While my job titles have varied, I’ve consistently built safety, trust, and deep connection with those around me.
I’m a strong believer in counselling’s ability to help people move through life’s difficult periods from my experiences as both a client and practitioner. I’m genuinely honoured that you’re considering working with me. Please know I’m committed to supporting you with empathy, respect, and dedication during our work together.
Outside of counselling, you’ll usually find me outdoors with my wife and Timber - our flat-coated retriever mix. I can’t seem to walk past a bike shop without being drawn in, and Timber is the same with anywhere he thinks might have treats.

After graduating in with a BA in the History of Science from the University of King’s
College in Halifax, I started my own business teaching yoga. Many of my yoga students
would ask me for advice on how to use yoga to help with their chronic pain, and that
inspired me to learn as much as I could about how to make my yoga classes
therapeutic as well as inclusive of different abilities, mobility levels, and health
challenges.
I first started thinking about pursuing physiotherapy as a career during one of my
advanced yoga trainings, when a pelvic health physiotherapist did a guest lecture about
the muscles of the pelvic floor. I immediately felt so fascinated by these small pelvic
muscles that most people are hardly aware of, and yet which have a huge impact on
quality of life.
That experience planted the seed for me to go on to get my Masters in Physiotherapy
from Dalhousie University. As a physiotherapist today, I am lucky enough to get to
pursue my passions for both chronic pain management and pelvic health.
I have specialized training in pelvic physiotherapy and can treat a wide range of pelvic
conditions including urinary incontinence and pelvic pain, in individuals of all genders.
My experience also includes treating individuals living with persistent pain as part of the
allied health team of the Pain Management Unit in Halifax, NS, and co-teaching their
Pain Self-Management Program.
In my spare time I love to sew, knit, boulder, and spend time with my cat, Ted.

My goal is to help you accomplish your goals, whether playing with your grandchildren or returning to your sport. To help you achieve your goals, my approach incorporates mat pilates, exercise prescription, educational based treatment and manual therapy.
When I’m not in the clinic, I like to mix things up! I explore this beautiful west coast some weekends, including hiking, paddle boarding, snowshoeing, and camping. While other weekends I stay here in Victoria, exploring the amazing culture this city has to offer.
