Counsellor Michelle Maxwell, MA, RCC Michelle is a graduate from the Master of Arts Counselling Psychology program at the University of Victoria.

Prior to becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor, she worked as a Youth and Family Counsellor in Victoria BC with clients in Elementary, Middle, High School, and Adult Education (ranging in age from 5 years old to 75 years old).

Growing up in Victoria BC, Michelle developed an early interest in health and wellness. Outdoor pursuits included hiking, exploring beaches and trails up and down Vancouver Island.

Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Victoria, Michelle moved to Calgary AB, where she was employed as a Youth and Family Counsellor within the residential treatment centre setting and the educational system.

Due to the colder winter weather in Alberta, Michelle’s outdoor activities were adapted to include cross country skiing and skating outdoors, as well as sipping hot chocolate by the fire.

Michelle believes in the person-centred approach to Individual counselling; following the work pioneered by Carl Rogers, very much meeting the client “where they are at” via unconditional positive regard. A life-long learner,

Michelle regularly participates in professional development seminars, actively engaging in coursework to sharpen her skills and keep current with new developments in Counselling Psychology.

She also recently completed a course through Yale University with Dr.Laurie Santos titled “ The Science of Wellbeing”., focusing on the biopsychosocial approach to wellness.

Some of her favourite activities include spending time with family and friends, working out every day, exploring local hikes and trails, and visiting island beaches (including winter ocean plunges!)

A person once told me that your body is your best doctor and will heal itself; you just need to provide it with the right elements and environment to succeed.

I was first introduced to the world of rehabilitation after I suffered from a traumatic accident that left me broken mentally and physically. With the support of a fantastic rehabilitation team combined with pure determination to find my new normal, I went from being bound to a wheelchair to walking independently to eventually getting back to running. Through my endeavours, I learned that I had a desire to learn more about different rehabilitation modalities. The next thing I realized, I was signed up to attend school at Camosun College in the Exercise and Wellness program.

Four years later, I earned a degree and received the CSEP /SCPE Undergraduate Student Award – Exercise Therapy awarded to a program graduate with the highest academic standing in the curriculum’s scientific portion.

I am now certified as a BC Kinesiologist, Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology – Certified Exercise Physiologist, Level 1 Yoga Instructor, and Functional Movement Screener Level 1.

No matter where you are in your journey, I will be working closely with the Parkway team to provide you with the best support from the training derived from science-based evidence. You can expect to be led or assisted through a personal conditioning program specific to your needs in a training session with me. In the session, I will provide technical feedback, answer questions or concerns related to the treatment plan, and assist you in understanding your condition or the required rehabilitation.

My goal is to help you reach your maximum potential in a safe and healthy environment, the way that my rehabilitation team once helped me when I was injured. I genuinely want to create a lasting positive impression on my client’s lives and ensure that they can reach the full potential that they deserve.

Growing up on the Island and playing competitive soccer, I had my fair share of injuries. I came to Parkway many years ago and was always impressed by how the team here treated me. They were kind, empathetic, motivating, knowledgeable and skilful. These experiences helped me get back to activities I loved which inspired me to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

I graduated from the University of Victoria in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology. I went on to complete my Masters of Physiotherapy from the University of Western Ontario in 2020. Having an active lifestyle, I fully understand how injuries can impact much more than just our day-to-day activities. I believe in evidence-informed practice and staying current with the latest research. Using a mixture of hands-on therapy, education and teamwork, I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals.

In my free time, you can usually catch me outside enjoying mountain biking, exploring new trails, hiking, and most importantly, eating Tacofino. I am also continuing to find the best banana bread and croissants the Island has to offer. So, if you have any leads, please let me know!

Laura Despins, Certified Athletic Therapist, Kinesiologist I was born and raised in Metchosin, BC, and have enjoyed every moment of living on the beautiful West Coast. I graduated from Camosun College with a Bachelor of Athletic and Exercise Therapy and am now a certified Athletic Therapist and Kinesiologist at Parkway Physiotherapy. Although I grew up very active early, I spent my early career working at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort, executing once in a lifetime events such as weddings, conferences and golf tournaments. It wasn’t until I became heavily involved in running and kickboxing that I developed many overuse injuries and became a client at Parkway Physiotherapy myself. My experiences through physiotherapy and my athletic background ignited my passion for becoming involved in health and wellness and starting my schooling at Camosun.

Years after I finished school, I sustained a severe foot injury while mountain biking, which left me unable to fully weight bear or walk for eight months. At first, I was crushed at realizing I wouldn’t live my usual active lifestyle; however, after two days spent on the couch, I was motivated to discover what I was capable of and continue to be involved. I got an off-road knee scooter and went to the gym daily. Having sustained a life-changing injury, I further developed my clinical skills, empathy towards clients, and creativity to find new ways to exercise. If I could sum up what I learned in my years of schooling into one sentence, it would be the importance of exercise and living a healthy lifestyle to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries and chronic diseases.

As an Athletic Therapist, I work with a broad spectrum of clients, not just athletes. I have a particular interest in treating clients who have suffered from concussions and work-related accidents.

A big part of my treatment is genuinely getting to know my clients and their personal goals and help them get back to their “normal”. This can be anything from walking to the mailbox and back, completing a 10km run, Crossfit or being able to hike and enjoy the west coast. My goal is for you to leave feeling better than when you came in!

After graduating, I started my physiotherapy career more than 15 years ago in the Philippines. I worked in the health care industry in the U.K. before coming to Canada – my country of choice.

I worked for several years in Toronto in various health care capacities while credentialling to practice physiotherapy in Canada. Finally, I made the move to our natural paradise, Vancouver Island, about three years ago.

I’m very honoured to have joined Parkway Physiotherapy to pursue my passion, which is to help people of all ages recover more quickly from injuries and illnesses, experience improved mobility with reduced pain, and generally enjoy an improved quality of life.

I follow an attentive, one-on-one approach to accurately assess my clients’ needs and guide them on the best route to recovery with reduced risk of reinjury.

When I’m not helping my clients, I’m busy kayaking, hiking, biking, running, and swimming. I like to cook and am an avid photographer, and I love trying to capture the beauty and wonder of this beautiful place we call home.

I graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2018. I then proceeded to complete a Masters of Physiotherapy from the University of British Columbia in 2020. My experiences include working with patients in both hospital and private clinic settings as well as research regarding falls prevention. I believe in an evidence-based active treatment approach that combines education, exercise, manual therapy and IMS. I work to build self-efficacy in clients so they can feel confident and empowered throughout their recovery.

Growing up in the Lower Mainland, I participated in various sports such as soccer and swimming. Shortly after finishing high school, I relocated to Vancouver Island and have been happy to call the Island home ever since. Working seasonally as a sous-chef in Tofino for over a decade, I developed a deep appreciation for surfing and the seemingly boundless outdoor recreational opportunities the Westcoast has to offer.

Having dealt with several sports-related injuries, I became interested in human kinetics, injury prevention and rehabilitation. The patient-centred care I received during my own experience with physiotherapy was invaluable in helping me quickly return to my active lifestyle and am thrilled to be in a position where I can similarly assist others.
